Democrats Projected to Take Control of Both Chambers of Congress
Democrats are heading toward a major political victory in the 2026 US midterm elections, with the party projected to take control of both chambers of Congress. According to NBC News projections, Democrats are expected to gain a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, setting the stage for a new political challenge for President Donald Trump.
The projected victory could significantly change the balance of power in Washington when the new Congress begins in January 2027.
Democrats Projected to Win at Least 252 House Seats
According to an NBC News analysis, Democrats are expected to win at least 252 seats in the House of Representatives. A party needs 218 seats to secure a majority in the 435-member chamber.
The projected total could still change by a few seats as vote counting and election analysis continue. However, the current estimate suggests Democrats could secure a comfortable majority.
Democrats Flip Five Senate Seats
Democrats have also made significant gains in the Senate, flipping five seats previously held by Republicans, according to NBC News projections.
The projected gains include Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. These results could give Democrats control of the upper chamber alongside their expected House majority.
The party has also scored projected victories in several key gubernatorial races, including Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Iowa.
Voters Express Dissatisfaction With Trump and Congress
NBC News exit polls indicate widespread dissatisfaction among American voters.
According to the survey, 62% of voters disapprove of President Donald Trump's job performance. More than three-quarters also expressed dissatisfaction with the way Congress is doing its job.
Nearly half of voters said they viewed the election as an opportunity to send a message of disapproval to Trump.
The findings suggest that voter frustration with the administration and Congress may have played an important role in the election outcome.
Trump Faces a More Challenging Final Two Years
If Democrats take control of both chambers, Trump could face greater resistance to his legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
However, the president will retain his veto power. Democrats are not projected to have the two-thirds majority required to override a presidential veto.
Trump appeared to acknowledge the changing political situation by posting a picture of a red baseball cap bearing the word “VETO” on social media.
Trump Criticizes Republicans and Signals Openness to Democrats
Following the projected Republican losses, Trump criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott, suggesting that Abbott's political position had hurt the party's performance.
He also blamed Fox News for giving too much airtime to Democrats.
At the same time, Trump indicated that he was willing to work with Democrats on proposals he considers worthwhile. He told Politico that some Democrats had already contacted him after the election, although he did not identify them.
What Could Change in US Politics?
A Democratic-controlled House and Senate could reshape the political environment in Washington.
Democrats may gain greater influence over legislation, federal spending and congressional investigations. They could also increase scrutiny of the Trump administration's policies and decisions.
However, Trump's presidential powers will remain in place, and his ability to veto legislation could become an important factor in future political disputes.
The coming two years could therefore bring more negotiations, disagreements and political battles between the White House and Congress.
